Climate Cooling give St James Catholic High School comprehensive classroom comfort

Background

St James Catholic High School is a well established mixed comprehensive school situated in Colindale, North London. It’s a specialist sports and science college with over 1,200 pupils and a 100 strong staff. Until 1996 St James was spread over three locations but a major relocation in September 1996 brought all departments together at one 18-acre site in Colindale.

When funds became available in 2005 the first phase of a plan to introduce air conditioning to selected classrooms was put out to tender. The contract was awarded to Climate Cooling.

St James gives Climate Cooling a logistical challenge

The recommendations drawn up by Climate Cooling for Fujitsu ceiling fitted units, which would duct to heat exchangers mounted on the roof of the buildings or to tamperproof enclosures at ground level. The challenge for Climate Cooling was to plan and execute the work around the school’s busy timetable.

Climate Cooling prepared a programme that avoided any major installation activities in classrooms and other areas during lesson periods. This often involved early morning and evening shifts as well as weekends. This flexible approach was accommodated within the budget and only a minimal effect on the agreed timetable.

Climate Cooling awarded additional contract

Following the successful installation of air conditioning to the school’s computer rooms and a gymnasium in phase one, a second phase was commissioned in early 2006. The challenge, once again, was to carry out the work with minimal disruption to the school’s busy timetable. The task was completed in the agreed time and St James is delighted with the results.

Plans are already in hand for a major extension to the new gymnasium and refurbishment of other classrooms and facilities – in all it’s a £2million project and we see no reason to look further than Climate Cooling to meet our air-con requirements for this major contract.”
